What Not to Talk About During Your Divorce

Related: Dirty TricksBook

When you and your spouse talk, it’s important that you don’t give away information that may allow your spouse to take advantage of you.

Here are some “don’ts” to remember. Don’t talk about:

. What you don’t understand
. What you have heard through the grapevine or rumor mill
. Your proposed financial settlement
. Your plans to move away from the area
. Your health problems
. Your sex life
. How you spend your free time
. How much money you are saving or spending
. Your detailed vacation plans
. Early stage career plans

In other words, less is better. If you need to talk, I recommend your therapist or maybe a close and trusted friend, and definitely not your children.

Women often share too much information and give away their position on financial strategy, child custody issues, and other aspects of the divorce.

I suggest you rent the movie Kramer vs. Kramer with Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep and also The War of the Roses with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito. Both of these movies paint a realistic picture of how good intentions in the divorce process often disintegrate into bitter enmity.

This may be written for women, but it certainly applies to men as well - I found out the hard way. Guys, read her book so you know what you are facing!
